Greyhills Academy approved for reauthorization
TUBA CITY, Ariz. - The Education Committee of the Navajo Nation Council held a regular meeting at Greyhills Academy Auditorium on June 16. One of the items on the agenda was the reauthorization of Greyhills Academy High School (GAHS).

Jonathan Nez, council delegate from Shonto, sponsored Legislation No. 0849-10 for sanctioning and reauthorizing the grant at GAHS.

Hopi High graduates honor milestones
POLACCA, Ariz. - Brannon Sidney, president of the Hopi High School Student Council, kicked off the graduation ceremony by talking about the milestones the class made this past school year. "We made it," he told his classmates. The crowd responded with applause as 115 students graduated May 27 at Bruins football stadium. Approximately 3,000 attended the event.

Polacca Head Start traditional gardening project
POLACCA, Ariz. - Despite the windy weather conditions, the Polacca Head Start Garden Project and Ms. Kaursgowva's class planted heirloom traditional seeds in their new terrace garden. This is the second annual planting celebration for Polacca Head Start.

Hopi Bookmobile provides many services to Hopi communities
MOENCOPI, Ariz. - The Hopi Bookmobile or "Tutuqayki Sikisve" made a stop in Upper Moenkopi on May 20 to provide reading material and media such as DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes and Internet access to residents. The Bookmobile, provided by the Hopi Department of Education, goes to all the villages to provide library material.

TUBA CITY, Ariz. - On May 19 the Tuba City Junior High band presented the final performance of the year. Under the direction of Morris Nesmith, the band's performance included the guitar classes.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Campaign for High School Equity, a coalition of leading civil rights organizations focused on high school education reform, reported recently that less than half of American Indian and Alaska Native students graduate each year, compared with more than 70 percent of all students nationwide.

Hopi Junior High promotes 85 students
POLACCA, Ariz. - Keynote speakers Kelly Keith and Allyssa Begay told junior high students how to handle college. The dynamic duo spoke during the Hopi Jr. High promotion last Wednesday night. In all, 85 students were promoted during the ceremony at Bruins football stadium. About 500 attended the event.

Udall Foundation selects ASU student for intern program
PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Udall Foundation has selected Nicholet Deschine, a graduate student from ASU's College of Public Programs, as a 2010 Native American Congressional Intern.

Deschine is one of a dozen students selected for the highly regarded internship program in Washington, D.C., which places Native students in positions where they are able to observe government decision-making processes first-hand.

Hopi grad excels in athletics, journalism
POLACCA, Ariz. - Hopi High's Shelby Yellowhorse ended her senior year in great fashion with awards for athletics and journalism. Yellowhorse, who maintained a B average, was active throughout the year. She served as manager for the boys basketball and football teams. She also enjoyed her art class. She is the daughter of Mardell Lomayestewa and stepfather Aaron Scott of Shungopavi.

Hopi High graduation set for May 27
POLACCA, Ariz. - Rick Baker, the legendary Hopi High boys cross country coach, will be the keynote speaker at Hopi High's graduation at 4 p.m. May 27. Hopi Chairman LeRoy Shingoitewa, Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr., National Honor Society sponsor Carrie Joseph and Kimberly Secklestewa from special education will also be speaking.

TUBA CITY, Ariz. - On May 11, Greyhills Academy recognized students for outstanding accomplishments. Numerous students were recognized for most improved, best attendance and the top 10 from each category. Categories included department recognitions, such as the Career Technical Program, Diné Studies and Fine Arts, Exceptional Services, Freshman Academy and Social Sciences, Math and Sciences and Student Council.

Arizona Highways officials pay special visit to Hopi High
POLACCA, Ariz. - Hopi High School's radio broadcast and journalism class had two incredible events that were combined. Hopi High won 12 radio broadcast awards and two journalism awards during the spring Arizona Interscholastic Press Association awards ceremony at Arizona State University. Unfortunately, the students weren't able to go down for the event.

Hopi High JROTC honors new, outgoing cadets at 8th Annual Military Ball
POLACCA, Ariz. - The Hopi Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) had an impressive school year this year. What better way to end the school year than by ending with a Military Ball. The ball took place May 1 with the receiving line starting at 6:10 p.m. The cadets, parents of cadets, special guests and staff were greeted by the staff officers and others. The services started at 6:30 p.m. with a prayer by Rod Pongyesea. The posting of colors was conducted by the JROTC Honor Guard.

Finance and Accounting Scholarship Project
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The Budget and Finance Committee of the Navajo Nation Council met April 6 and passed legislation amending the eligibility requirements to the Finance and Accounting Scholarship Project, which is administered by the Navajo Nation Investment Committee through the Navajo Nation Office of the Controller.
