Tribal leaders holds SB 1070 forum
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Sen. Albert Hale and community leaders discussed potential impacts SB 1070 will have on Arizona Indian nations at the Arizona State Capitol on July 21. Phoenix Vice Mayor Michael Nowakowski, Promise Arizona, the Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission and Apache County Sheriff Joe Dedman provided information on how best to prepare before the enactment date of July 29.

Navajo Council passes crucial legislation
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - The Navajo Nation Council passed historic legislation last week authorizing the Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation, Inc., Utah Navajo Health Systems, Inc. and Winslow Indian Health Care Center, Inc., to participate in Title V Self-Governance. The Council also passed the Judicial Elections Referendum Act of 2010 and the Tobacco Products and Licensing Act Amendments of 2010.

Antelope Canyon slated to be Navajo Nation 'gateway'
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - About three miles west of Page, just off of scenic Route 98, something special is in the works. Navajo Parks and Recreation is teaming with ETD, Inc. and architects from the LAM Corporation in the development of a visitor's center in Antelope Canyon that will serve as a gateway to the Navajo Nation.

Hopi Council removes Felter as Council secretary
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - In a final vote of 10 in favor, 5 against, the Hopi Tribal Council on June 30 formally removed Mary A. Felter, Hopi Council secretary, from office in a public hearing that lasted just over two hours. The hearing resulted from a series of charges made against Felter alleging that she had violated certain provisions of the Hopi Tribal Constitution.

Navajo legislation addresses political campaign signs
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz., - Political campaign signs may soon have restrictions according to Legislation 0288-10, which the Judiciary Committee approved last Thursday. The legislation is an attempt to further initiate an eco-friendly Navajo Nation by addressing the neglect of old campaign signs, which has caused unnecessary litter and would generate revenue.

Navajo Nation, KeyBank partner on loan for new jails, judicial facilities
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Last Thursday, Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr., and Controller Mark Grant signed documents for a $60 million loan from KeyBank to be used to build new judicial and correctional facilities in Crownpoint, N.M. and Tuba City. The signing comes six years after discussions first began and fulfills President Shirley's vision to see needed judicial and jail facilities built on Navajoland to combat a rising crime rate.

Delegate contends line item veto is wrong
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - When a Navajo constituent goes to their respective chapter government for housing discretionary funds or public employment program opportunities, the chance will not be there. On June 24, President Joe Shirley Jr. exercised for the first time line item veto authority, which one council delegate contends takes away the opportunity for Navajo people to seek such assistance from their local chapters.

Shirley uses line item veto for first time
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. on Thursday signed Resolution CJN-25-10 into law, exercising presidential line item veto authority for the first time since it was approved more than six months ago. This saved the Navajo Nation $5,650,000 in spending, which would have tapped the Navajo Nation Department of Justice's Contingency Management Fund.
