Is our poor Mother Earth finally fighting back?
Wells Mahkee Jr.
The Observer

With all the recent tragedies the world has encountered in recent years, it's been quite surprising to me that not one person - not even in Indian Country - has mentioned what I happen to believe is happening on our poor planet Earth; our poor, neglected, abused shell of a "mother" who apparently has had quite enough of what her "children" have been doing to her and is now striking back with force. How else would you explain the recent surge in natural disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis and the like?

Instead of taking a few steps back and looking at the big picture, our arrogance and complacency pretty much dictates that we blame one another. Ironically, it's this non-stop "blame-game" that I believe will ultimately lead to our societal demise.

Centuries ago, when humankind still respected the supernatural, we humbly gave ourselves to whims of the unknown. Periodic rumblings and eruptions on earth, as well as celestial phenomena in the skies above governed our overall well-being and were explained to us by our elders as powers beyond our comprehension that should be respected for what they were, even if they weren't understood. It was a time of great cultural and moral prosperity. Today, that respect for our religion and well-being is gone, replaced by insurmountable greed, corruption, focus on self and a need for dominance.

Gone are the days when the word of tribal elders was law, regardless of whether we agreed with it or not. Today, we squabble over who has power and struggle to interpret laws and constitutions that seemingly do more harm than good and only serve those who are in power and control. Today, those in power positions across the globe continue to take advantage of those who are already demoralized by their place in society and attempt to demonize them even further. At times, those who are demoralized strike back in violent ways.

Is the world we live in now the same world that was imagined by our forefathers eons ago? I don't believe so. Our Earth Mother is very, very old, but she is also very, very wise. She exists in her own realm, which was here long before we were - her progeny of many diverse colors, ethnicities, languages and cultures. Much like our parents before us, our Earth Mother gave us a purpose in life, and now that purpose has been forgotten, so much like the proverbial mother, she is - for now - gently reminding us of who is in charge.

When are we going to heed her warnings? Or will it take another natural disaster?

I always knew that the Earth would get tired of the virus that the human race has become sooner or later. This article hits the problem on the nose; we do not respect the earth like we used to. We take her for granted, even though she is the only reason we are alive in the universe. We are clutching the skin of this tiny planet (by perspective) and falling infinitely through space, but protected. And now the Earth is, for lack of a better term, pissed. If you don't belive the Earth is alive then think of cause and effect. Everything we do to the Earth and on the Earth adds up to a total of what we see today. The weather, the oceans, the ice caps, the destruction. For something that is not supposed to be alive the Earth is showing a very sentient trait, Self-Preservation. I think, right now, its too late to make up for what we have done to the Earth. The "Total" is too high for any reparations made now to equal the damage out. All we can do is once again respect the ground we walk on and "The Bigger Picture" that the Earth represents.

DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW: Scientist say that a 8.8 earthquake in Chile caused the earth to shift, shortening the length of a day by 1.26 microseconds and moved the earths axis by 8 cm or 2.7 milliarcsonds. My Hopi friends say that Mother earth is going out of balance as the twins are leaving their post at both poles (melting) and the earth vibrated down her backbone causing an 8.8 earthquake in Chile.

My Hopi freinds say that Mother Earth is out of balance as the twins are leaving their post on the poles (melting) and she sent vibrations down her backbone or spine causing an 8.8 earthquake in Chile.

People and society fears the aftermath of an earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, and other natural world elements. These types of event has been with us since time begun. What's the big deal, except nature will continue to ravage the earth and we will continue to suffer under these changes.

This is a good article. When one realizes the power of the earth, the only direction is humility and appreciation that the earth is our mother. Thanks for reminding us of our place in this world and the true powers who are.

Our Earth is constantly "fighting" back. Each time, we upset the natural way, earth answers back - sometimes in a big way, sometimes small but she always acts to re-balance the system. Hanta, Bird flu, Ebola, HVS in fish, drought are all consequences of "our" messing with the earth.
