MNA collections center built 'green to the core'
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - When the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff began planning for its new collection center, it wanted to make sure to reach for the highest standards in which to house its fragile collections, while reducing the costs of running the new building. "We had a commitment from the very beginning to make this building green to the core," MNA Director Robert Breunig stated. And green to the core it is.

Instead, they received support and assistance from more than 350 community members from faith-based groups, businesses, assistance organizations and volunteers who gave time and manpower this weekend, to help those affected by recent flooding.

Hopi Council approves carbon capture storage project
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - In a surprise move, the Hopi Tribal Council approved a controversial project giving four western energy companies and the Hopi Tribe the go-ahead to evaluate geologic characteristics of the Black Mesa Basin for potential commercial storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in a new method known as carbon capture sequestration (CCS). The proposed project seeks to drill a series of exploration wells on Hopi land to collect and analyze geological, geophysical and water quality data to determine if the rock strata is hospitable enough to store toxic CO2 extracted from coal plant emissions underground on Hopi and near Navajo reservation communities.

Cornfields Chapter granted certification
CORNFIELDS, Ariz. - The Cornfields Chapter is now the 11th certified chapter on the Navajo Nation. The Transportation and Community Development Committee granted certification to the chapter last week with a 6-0 vote. Following certification, the Navajo Division of Community Development presented the chapter with a $160,000 check to help spur local development.

77th Annual Hopi festival highlights July 4th weekend
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The balmy weather, art crowd and holiday excitement over the July 4 weekend only served to heighten the festive atmosphere at the 77th Annual Hopi Festival at Museum of Northern Arizona. Ticket sales showed that there was a 12 percent increase in visitors to the Hopi Show this year, but you could tell that just by the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd at the Friday night reception.

Snowmaking approval disappoints reservation residents
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Final clearance by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack on July 1 gave Arizona Snowbowl the go-ahead to resume with expansion and snowmaking infrastructure on the San Francisco Peaks. The decision disappointed many Natives in northern Arizona area, and left little room for additional legal challenges. Hopis and Navajos, along with other culturally affiliated tribes, stated that their religious freedom has been violated.

Hopi, Navajo group meets to discuss Peabody, Navajo Generating Station
KYKOTSMOVI, Ariz. - A new Hopi and Navajo grassroots group has been meeting in the hopes of developing a more formal posture on tribal lease reopeners regarding coal revenues and alternative methods of water usage at Peabody Coal and the Navajo Generating Station (NGS). The "Inter-tribal COALition" held a meeting June 26 at the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center in front of a capacity crowd of Hopi, Navajo and other individuals who are interested in working together to develop proposals to present to the Navajo and Hopi tribal councils that will upgrade current lease conditions with Peabody Western Coal company.

Coconino County school superintendent retires
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - On June 28, Coconino County Superintendent of Schools Cecilia Owen presented the Board of Supervisors with her retirement letter, effective August 17. This is approximately two years and four months before the end of her term, which is December 31, 2012. Superintendent Owen is working closely with the Board of Supervisors to ensure the schools office experiences a smooth transition to a new superintendent who, by state statute, must be appointed by the Board to complete her term.

POLACCA, Ariz. - Hopi community radio station KUYI can now be heard throughout the world. KUYI is now streaming on the Internet and can be heard as it airs. Anyone with Internet access can log onto www.KUYI.net and listen. In one 24-hour period last week, KUYI had 2,000 listeners - including folks from Thailand and Egypt.

Night patrols seek out illegal campfires
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Four agencies will begin patrolling the skies and land around Flagstaff, Coconino National Forest, and Coconino County as part of the enforcement of fire restrictions that were implemented on Wednesday, June 23. The Arizona Department of Public Safety will begin flying patrols on Tuesday to locate any campfires in the area and will continue periodic patrols throughout the next two weeks in an effort to keep large wildfires from igniting.

Coconino supervisors impose open burning ban
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Coconino County Board of Supervisors held a special meeting on June 25 to impose a ban on open burning on public and private lands in the unincorporated areas of the county. The ban took effect on Friday, June 25 and will remain in effect until fire danger conditions subside.

School signs in Tuba City vandalized
TUBA CITY, Ariz. - Within the last month toward the end of the school year, the Greyhills Academy High School and Tuba City High School marquee signs were vandalized and damaged. There were large pieces of rocks or asphalt that were thrown at the signs, which shattered the coverings and damaged some of the lettering. According to information from the TCUSD Business Office, it will cost approximately $4,570 to repair the sign. There may also be additional costs incurred to move the sign to prevent future vandalism. Over $13,550 has already been spent on previous vandalism repairs.

MNA to celebrate living legacy of Hopi expression
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The 77th Annual Hopi Festival of Arts and Culture returns to the Museum of Northern Arizona July Fourth weekend, bringing 75 of the top Hopi artists and demonstrators, music and dance performers, and speakers who will talk about Hopi beliefs and current issues. This year's festival will honor longtime friend of MNA and interpretive collaborator, Michael Kabotie.

First held on July Fourth weekend in 1930, the Hopi Festival represents the long-standing partnership between the Hopi people and the Museum. Over the years the event has become a regional tradition for artists and collectors, alike, and for visitors seeking an authentic cultural experience at "the oldest Hopi art show in the world."
