When it comes to art, Pinon is on top


Students receive more than 66 art awards during the school year

PINON, Ariz. - Does your student have exceptional Art skills? Does your student love to paint, draw, weave or do bead work? Pinon is the place for them. Pinon Accelerated Middle School Art students have proudly received over 66 art awards this previous school year, quadrupling last year's total of four awards. Ms. Lea Elder, Pinon Accelerated Middle School Art Teacher, has made it her mission to give students a glimpse into their possible futures as working Artist.

Below is the break down of Pinon success for the 2011-2012 school year -

• Pinon Classified Staff Appreciation T-Shirt Logo Competition - Winner: Tyrick Begay (eighth grade), $50 cash prize. Tryick's artwork will be featured on the new Staff Appreciation Shirts.

• The Art of Conservation "Wildlife Forever's" State-Fish Art Contest - Winner: Izabella Chee (seventh grade), First Place. Izabella's Art will be featured on a State Stamp featuring her painting of the Apache Trout. Winner: Jimmina Mike (seventh grade), Second Place. A certificate of recognition has been awarded. Winner: Troy Hosteen (eighth grade), Third Place. A certificate of recognition has been awarded.

Philomena Slinkey and teacher Ms. Lea Elder awarded certificates of recognition.

• Pinon Health Center Art-Bullying Poster Contest - Winner: Sheldon Natnoi (eighth grade). Sheldon's poster was printed professionally in full color [42 x 29] after he recreated it from his draw draft using graphic design techniques. Winner: Elizabeth Greyeyes (seventh grade). Elizabeth's poster was printed professionally in full color [42 x 29] after she recreated it from her draw draft using graphic design techniques. Winner: Dominique Begay (seventh grade). Dominique's poster was printed professionally in full color [42 x 29] after he recreated it from his draw draft using graphic design techniques.

These posters will be displayed in the Pinon Health Center as well as around Pinon Accelerated Middle School.

• Radiant Peace Art Competition - International Winners: Leniah Yazzie (eighth grade), $75 cash prize. Tiffany Corum (eighth grade), $75 cash prize. Breann Badoni (sixth grade), $75 cash prize. These students will have their art pieces hang in the Radiant Peace Art Museum in St. Petersburg, Fla. along with receiving their cash prizes. Honorable Mention: Daniel E. Tsosie (eighth grade), $30 cash prize. Francy Joe (seventh grade), $30 cash prize. Dawn Yazzie (sixth grade), $30 cash prize. All 50 participants in the "Radiant Peace" Art Contest received a embroidered patch for their efforts.

• Celebrating Art Anthology Publications - The following students earned the right to be published in the hardcover, full-color Art Anthology "Celebrating Art." Ms. Elder received a free copy of both editions of the anthology because over 15 of her students were published in each edition. Over 200 students participated/entered for their chance to be published. Fall 2011 Published Students include eighth grade students Tekisha Chee, Harold Lee, Melchijah Toddy, Shynnah Tacheene, Maechelle Tsosie and Miguel Musngi. Seventh grade student include Brandon Clark, Samantha Grandson, Alexander Nez, Jimmina Mike, Tanisha Whitehair, Angelita Williams and Rolondo Bahe. Sixth grade students include Hannah Begay, Jalyn Begay, Amber James, Karrington Remiro, Alicia Tsosie, Wilbert Tsosie, Olin Yonnie, Caitlin Begay, Kelli Manybeads, Jarrett Barton, Richardo Begay, Tamisha Benally and Charmaine Shonie.

Spring 2012 Published Students include ninth grade-PHS Shevon Badoni. Eighth grade students include Marquetta Taylor, Charmaine Francis, Leniah Yazzie, Melchijah Toddy, Quentina Bahe, Shynnah Tacheene, Travina John, Demetria Cowboy and Romello Nelson. Seventh grade students include Brandon Ben, RuDean James, Jamie Lee, Eric Cook and Jimmina Mike. Sixth grade students include Breann Badoni, Dailene Agoodie, Dawn Yazzie, Lentho Burbank, Olin Yonnie, Rodrick Tsedah, Vela Yazzie, Wynora Tsosie, Alicia Tsosie, Bradley Joe and Quilana Henry. All four of the self-contained SPED students earned the right to be published in this edition of "Celebrating Art." There were 53 total publications.

• Eighth Grade Mural Project - Thanks to Ms. Elder's Eighth Grade Art classes first and second semester there were four 8ftx4ft murals for promotion and to hang in the halls of Pinon Accelerated Middle School. Funding for the Murals was raised due to Art Competition Winning from Radiant Peace 2010-11 ($150).

• Art Department/ Ms. Lea Elders Awards, VSA/CVS Caremark 2012 Teacher Awardee . . . $1,500 prize for use in the classroom. The award was received for Ms. Elder's dedication to incorporating creativity and the arts into her classroom for children with and without disabilities. It was awarded from The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
